Lego is the apex of all toys, the largest toy manufacturer in the world by sales and it has been for decades since the company was founded in the 1930s. As of 2015, 600 billion Lego pieces have been sold worldwide. This ranges from cheap Lego sets all the way to expensive adult sets worth a lot of money.
There are two main reasons Lego is so popular. Firstly, you can make anything from Lego, so it lets you use your imagination and be creative. Secondly, Lego is a toy that can be enjoyed by all age groups. Whether you are a child, teenager or adult, there is a lego set for everyone.
There are so many different options to play with, but what we have found is that the most popular LEGO UK sets are;
Lego consists of plastic bricks (also known as Lego blocks), in different colours, shapes and sizes, that can combine together to create larger objects. These bricks are made of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). The best thing about Lego is that you can make anything with it, including vehicles, buildings, even your own Hogwarts Castle! Once you’ve created a Lego model, you can take it apart and reuse the pieces for your next project. Lego also comprises a mixture of gears and figurines (called minifigures), to get even more creative.
The word Lego is a shortened version of two Danish words “leg godt”, which in English means “play well”. The LEGO Group was founded by the Dane Ole Kirk Kristiansen and he felt that “leg godt” summed up the ideals of the company. Ole’s grandson Kjeld is the current owner of the LEGo Group.
Lego was invented in 1932 and began life in founder Ole Kirk Kristiansen’s carpentry workshop, which was his profession. Ole began his career producing furniture, but then changed to wooden toys in a move that would change the toy market forever (and all of our childhoods!)
Adults can absolutely play with Lego. In fact, a lot of sets are now rated as 18+ for that very reason and in our experience a lot of our customers are adults buying Lego for themselves. We have put together a selection of LEGO sets for adults for anyone hoping to relive their childhood.
